  1. I didn't have the time to soak the grains, but to keep up with the theme I added very well drained and rinsed can garbanzo beans. Everything else equal, I prepared the salad today. It was so delicious!! …and so easy to make! yummy!! Next time I'm planning to do it as suggested! I'm guessing I lost a little bit of crunch! Yet, it was delicious! thanks a lot for sharing!

  4. Wikipedia: Chana dal – split chickpeas without seedcoat. Chana dal is produced by removing the skin of Kala chana and then splitting it. Although machines can do this, it can be done at home by soaking the whole chickpeas, and removing the loose skins by placing the chickpeas between two towels and rubbing with a rolling pin.

Garbonzo beans are used through out the world and have many different names and are one of the most versatile beans not only just cooked and eaten but, you can grind down the cooked bean to make a bread called humus which isn't just a jewish dish it's used throughout the world as well. and it can be found in your regular grocery store not just your ethnic markets. just look for the American name Chick Pea's

  7. According to Manjula's website, chana dal is the split version of kala chana, or Bengal Gram. Kala chana belongs to the same family as chickpea. I found some Chana dal in the "international" section of my supermarket. The description on the back of the package calls it a lentil, but I believe that may be a generic term used by some for any small, flat bean. They certainly look like a smaller, more oval-shaped yellow split pea!

  8. I've always understood it as split yellow peas… you can get it at asian/ indian stores pretty readily as chana dal… or even online.
