Johnny (from the New England pronunciation of Journey) cakes have sugar usually. Hoe cakes do not.

Really nice — here’s a tip: whisk up the dry ingredients BEFORE you add the wet. That way you ensure everything is evenly mixed and don’t have to overstir.
Super!
We called it fried corn bread.

I Actually enjoy the stoppages for the tips and tricks. Brings me back to the days of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" show.
Frying these in oil is criminal. Still looks great chef, but dang it man, the historian in me doesn’t want them called Johnny cakes
OMG soooooo delish…they came out PERFECT…I used sunflower oil…didn't have to put a thing on them they were so amazing!!! Thank you xo
I live in Kentucky and I know several older women that would make these including my grandma. To me, they are basically fried unsweetened cornbread. Or sweetened if you like that. But maybe they are different in other places?
Its not a hoe cake if its nkt made by a hoe
He's making hoes!
Yoooo this Recipe is Fire. I would use the blue book and be to thick. Now I just did yours. The cakes are light and just great thank you
I don't have quite enough butter. I'm going to use a little olive oil, too. I can never taste it over the sugar. I've put it in muffins. No one complains.
Can I get away with skipping this flour?
Vito Spatafore approves!
Amazing. I can’t wait to try them…
Also George Washington’s favorite breakfast, served covered in butter and honey lol
Bro your enthusiasm is great.
My Mom used to make these when I was a girl. My sibs and I tease her, that she was not a particularly accomplished cook, but as she retorts (good-naturedly), "You didn't starve." This was one meal we always looked forward to.

Excellent recipe. My first attempt and perfect result
This is just pancakes with cornmeal
MF DOOM would love these
Unsalted butter on top??? Blasphemy!!! Other than that they look amazing lol.
I prefer mine to be more cornbread like than pancake like and I just add honey butter on them when they’re warm and it’s delish
