  1. Good news, folks! There is in fact historical evidence as to the origin of the fried potato, though you won't find it outside of where it was invented: Italy! Yes, you read it correctly. The Spanish did indeed bring tomato and potato plants from the Americas in the 16th century but used them only for decoration. It wasn't long before the culinarily curious Florentines began eating the fruits of both plants, AND they were the first to deep-fry ANYTHING in Europe, so we're talking at least four centuries ago and not French nor Belgian.
