My dad was a WWII veteran. When I taught I took his uniform to school on Memorial Day and talked about how freedom isn't free and that we have a huge debt of gratitude to our military. We also taught about what the words to the pledge of allegiance really mean. They aren't just words to memorize and randomly say by rote. Think about every word and it's meaning.
