  1. I made this recipe tonight and it was delicious, Great recipe as always Laura. I used beef bacon and ham in mine, after I cooked the beef bacon, I cooked the sausage in the beef bacon fat until it was browned and flavorful. Contined the recipe as written and finished it off with a little smoked sea salt for some extra smokey flavor

  2. The easy and affordable Dutch way is to use a pork trotter, smoked bacon and smoked sausages.

Soak the split peas with water the night before until they are generously covered. The next day, rinse them well in a sieve until the rinse water turns clear. Bring to the boil with plenty of water, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Then add the meat, except the smoked sausage. Skim the soup. Let it simmer for 1.5 hours. Then add the vegetables and let it simmer gently for another 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and add the smoked sausage and some finely chopped celery leaves just before serving. Eat a pancake for dessert.

Adding stock is absolutely not necessary! Just adding water is sufficient. Save that broth for another dish. The meat, vegetables and finally the smoked sausage provide enough flavor. It tastes even better the second day and is very practical for freezing. To give away or to comfort yourself on a rainy day.

I have always made it that way for my children and now also for my adult grandchildren, who love Grandma's pea soup.

A pig's trotter is extremely suitable and cheap for this preparation method. The bone gives strength to the soup and makes stock unnecessary.

Traditionally, we eat a pancake afterward. A complete meal.

Many greetings from the Netherlands, and as we say: "Smakelijk eten!".

  3. Laura…try making split pea soup with a little bit of coconut milk and shrimp/prawn/lobster/crabmeat! I CANNOT tell you how absolutely mind calmingly amazing it is! 🤤🤤

  4. funny thing is i’m using the recipe to make soup for my chickens (just minus potatoes and onions) it’s good for them in the cold winter months haha thank you!! definitely having some for myself too

  5. I must've lived a special life. Decades of cooking dried beans and I've yet to find a stone in them. In fact, after 20 years or so I pretty much stopped worrying about it.
